Magical Reinvention

"Who would deduce the dragonfly from the larva, the iris

from the bud, the lawyer from the infant?

...We are all shape-shifters and magical reinventors.

Life is really a plural noun, a caravan of selves."

— Diane Ackerman

This is a mosaic sculpture class held at A Work of Art Studio in the months of June- September, 2012, where the clients designed and made their own dragonflies (fish and frogs and flowers to come in another post). Here is Robin creating her body and wings with wire screen, wire and then tape to give it shape and form. Great care must be taken to create a solid form to carry all the weight of the plaster, cement, glass, and grout.

Here is Kathryn's dragonfly "Seymour", with washers for the base of his eyes. It is not really necessary to tape over the wire screen, but it does give a good solid base for beginners to plaster over.

Here is Pat, putting on a layer of plaster gauze to start stiffening the sculpture; then she paints on a layer of thinset mortar.

It is now ready for laying mosaic tiles. We mostly used Weldbond glue to attach our tiles, but thinset mortar could also be used as adhesive.

Kathryn drew a pattern on her wings to mimic a Zebra Dragonfly.

Here is Pat's lovely "buggy" face:)

Robin is using a multi colored pattern of greens and purples and mirror, very cheerful!

Seymour is starting to take shape!

Pat just finished grouting her dragonfly and is wiping the haze from the grout off her tiles.

 Robin's finished dragonfly.

Pat's finished mosaic sculpture!

Kathryn's finished dragonfly, "Seymour" and his spot in her garden, before being installed on a post in her flower box.

What a great class. It's a bit different to mosaic on a cement surface and I recommend a flat surface beginner's class before you tackle a layered surface. More posts to come about this same class with shapes of fish, flowers, and more....

Hand Sculpted Clay Class

"It was beautiful not despite but because of the friction it has had to endure. It had been thrashed around, but instead of being destroyed, it was improved with every scratch and scrape, sculpted. In fact, the scuffs themselves are what gave it its quiet splendor; they are responsible for turning a simple piece of glass (which could have just as easily been trash) into a gem. It wouldn't be the same without the wear and tear; it wouldn't be something pretty enough to be turned into jewelry if it hadn't been damn near broken. I closed my fist around this tear-shaped gem and thought about my own uneven edges, my own abrasions, and things I have endured that have, instead of breaking me, completed me, prepared me for the next tumble. Its odd beauty was hard-won. It came from reinventing itself. From having risen to the top of the discard pile. Like a phoenix, from victim to victor. (325)"
— Wendy Blackburn (Beachglass: A Novel)

Busyness

"Wherever I am, the world comes after me.

It offers me its busyness. It does not believe

that I do not want it. Now I understand

why the old poets of China went so far and high

into the mountains, then crept into the pale mist."
— Mary Oliver

Where have I been, you may ask? Well...

Running the salon is my "full-time" job which takes the biggest portion of my time. Pedicures with essential oils, up do's...
My oldest daughter was a Senior in high school this year and so...
Do the math... Here we are getting ready for prom.

My great friend and neighbor, Jack Johnson, took some great prom pictures of the kids. Check it out and many of his other amazing pictures at: http://jackbjohnsonstudio.com/emily_prom2012/index.html.

The next adventure was attending my niece's wedding in Florida. The reception was at my sister's beautiful house in St. Cloud.
This is a custom mosaic I made for this niche with a mirror over the table and vase of hydrangeas. It looks great hanging over the "Mickey Mantle".

Of course, I had the pleasure of doing the wedding hair and doing a final floral decorative touch on this groomsman cake from my sister's magnolia tree in the front yard.

These are the resident Sand Hill Cranes that grace the yard. They have no qualms about taking bread from your hands.

These are some mosaics I had done for MarySue and her husband, John that they have decorating their house.

Even in May, Florida was in need of rain. Lake Toho where they live is so low, their dock is surrounded by grass. But one can still enjoy the breath taking sunsets.

Next was Senior Stuff!  Emily receiving scholarships at Senior Award's Ceremony, and wearing an awesome velcro suit before flinging herself at a velcro wall on Senior Lock-in night at the high school.

And in between our sedate life in Lakeview we attended my father-in-law's funeral in New Jersey. What a beautiful bunch of Perusse's there to honor a great man. We also visited Grandma and Auntie's mausoleum in Fort Lee.

One can't be in Fort Lee and pass up visiting the actual "Fort", which is right next to the George Washington Bridge.

Back in Michigan Emily received her cap and gown, which, unfortunately didn't come with ironing instructions. Did you know that they melt under high heat? Would have been nice to know ahead of time. Ah well, I sewed it together and none knew.
She used her beautiful voice to sing at her Baccalaureate.

 Graduation Day!!!

So proud of my Sweetie!

In the meantime at the shop, I finished a prodded rag rug, check that out here: http://aworkofartstudio.blogspot.com/2012/06/rag-rug-to-finish.html. And I started a Sculptural Mosaic Class which will need its own post, to come later.
Next was Emily's graduation party which I held at my shop. It has great accommodations and attracted a great crowd. Thanks, everyone who came and supported us!
Amazing how quickly they get taller than Grandma.

One of my clients introduced me to this sweet Boston terrier who was lost the weekend of the party. I helped to post a lost message and picture on Facebook and her owner quickly found her:)

Back to the Hair! Here is Marchelle who needed a smart "do" for her American Idol audition. Unfortunately, she didn't make it, but I think she has a most excellent voice and has a beautiful spirit and will go far in life in whatever she chooses. Great job, Marchelle!

Now here is my sculptural mosaic flower that I have started in the class. I have since completely covered it in plaster gauze and it is ready for a layer of cement before I start adding mosaic bits.

It has been such a hot, humid summer here in Michigan and we had a few storms last week that took several trees down in our area. This is just one of the about 8 that went down right on our property line into this woods. I did wish for more light in my garden, guess I need to be more careful what I wish for?

Meeting Tiny Tim @Isla Morada in the Keys.
Actually, this was around 1987; just thought it was a fun add.
My next post will be about the Sculptural Mosaic Class taking place at the shop right now. So much fun and creativity, the students are surprising themselves with their genius:)
