• T-shirt Prodded Rag Rug Class- Tuesday, September 16, 6-9pm: Learn to make a prodded t-shirt in burlap rug using your old t-shirts. Bring at least 10 or more medium to heavy weight t-shirts or mid-weight fleece. Bring shears. Think of basic design and colors and bring those with you. Finished rugs approximately 20" x 24". This will take 4-6 classes to complete. Rest of materials provided. $60.- RSVP by pre-payment required, class starts Tuesday, September 16 and continues every Tuesday until finished.
• Essential Oils Class- Wednesday, Sept 17, 6-9pm:  Learn how Essential Oils can help in your daily life. *Going green with essential oils *Disinfectants *Household Cleaner *Odors Learn the benefits Essential Oils can provide. *Physical effects of the oils on the skin, nervous system, glands, muscles, blood and the lymph system. A list of beneficial oils will be provided and ways to use them. *Compresses *Inhalation *Topical Application *Carrier Oils *Baths We will partner up to do some hands on work with the vita flex points on the hands to affect specific body points. We will make Aromatherapy bath salts or a Facial scrub to take home for your personal use. Please RSVP by Tuesday, Sept. 16th so supplies can be ordered. Cost of class is $30.00, includes cost of supplies.
• Vino VanGogh Acrylic Painting Class- Thursday, Sept 18, 6-9pm:  Acrylic painting on 12"x12" canvas class  $45.00 class fee. Come and relax with a glass of wine and take home your painted masterpiece.RSVP required by pre-payment at studio.
• Watercolor Painting Class- Sept 25, Oct 16, 6-9pm:.No experience necessary. Paint a watercolor picture in one 3 hour class. $25.- all materials provided. RSVP required by pre-payment at studio.
• Basics of EBAY Selling- Thurs, Oct 2. 6-9pm: *Learn how to Price, Prepare Listing for Selling, Tips to Earn Profits, and Shipping.  *Pitfalls and how to make selling on eBay profitable and fun. *Learn the value of Feedback and how best to get and maintain a Positive Feedback Status. $25.- RSVP by pre-payment at the studio.
• Hand & arm warmers from Old Sweater Class- Tues,Oct 7, 6-9pm: Make a pair of hand warmers from an old  sweater. You provide the sweater and we provide the fun! $35.- RSVP required by pre-payment at studio
• Pottery Painting Class-  Thursday, Oct 23, 6-9pm: Paint a piece or two of pottery. We supply the pieces and glazes and firing. You have the fun of designing your pieces for yourself or for an awesome gift! $40.- RSVP by pre-payment at studio.
• Painted Walking Stick Class- Thursday, Oct 30, 6-9pm: Walking stick class. Come and paint or decorate a walking stick. $25.- all materials included. RSVP by pre-payment at studio.
• Soap Making Class- Saturday, Oct 25: 1-3 pm. $35.-all materials included. Limited to 6 students, RSVP required by pre-    payment. Learn the basics of lye soap making along with a bit of history of the craft by making about 2 pounds of soap. First week make and pour soap, second visit (to be determined) we will cut, finish and then let it finish curing (final curing about a month). We will use goat's milk or green tea for the base with the lye! RSVP by pre-payment.
• Free Quilting Bee- First Tuesday of every month
• A Work of Art Studio Nights- every Tuesday & Thursday. Having trouble finishing existing projects? Come work and get support from fellow artists any Tuesday or Thursday night from 6-9 pm. $2.50 per night. No RSVP necessary.

Studio time with mosaic projects all around!

 Our talented and versatile artist and teacher, Julie Sullivan is at it again, having perfected her sculpture armature process for mosaic (class to come in the future schedule). This is her gorgeous mosaic koi pond table top. 

 Here are two amazing artists working on terra-cotta bases for birdbaths in the garden.

This is a mosaic/mixed media piece I created for a mosaic auction for Doctors without Borders. It is called "A Time For Peace". It says: "I will write peace on your wings and you will fly all over the world." ~Sadako Sasaki
and on the back side is a mosaic rendering of the tardis time machine from the "Dr. Who" series.

A Mixed Media Studio

We had a busy studio tonight! Five wonderful women participated in the Mixed Media/Acrylic Painting Class, two started a mosaic class for the first time and two continued working on their mosaic masterpieces, and one amazing crocheter. I would call it a mixed media studio.

A Fish Story

    Julie Sullivan is all of the above. Julie has been teaching classes at A Work of Art Studio for about 5 years. She is indeed a master craftsman in whatever task she chooses to undertake. Among the classes she has taught at the studio: Braided Wool Rugs, Prodded T-Shirt Rag Rugs, Wagon Wheel Rugs, and Soap Making. She is a perfectionist and her work shows this fact; it is all beautifully created. I decided to have a mosaic sculpture class a few years ago in which many of my wonderful friends and clients partook. Four students made fish, two made flowers, one made a frog and the rest made dragonfly sculptures.

    Julie in her unfailingly tenacious masterful way made a remarkable fish sculpture. It took her a long time to finish because she chose to only work at the studio, and many Tuesdays and Thursdays she was pulled from this to help other students with their rug creations. She is making up for lost time with two new sculptures that she will also cover with mosaic to possibly set by her pond at home.

    Here is a look at the sculpture and mosaic process:

   

 First create a drawing of the sculpture shape, and then using wire screen, plastic bags, wire and tape the sculpture process begins.

 Once the main form is created it is meticulously covered with plaster gauze and then a layer of cement. 

For a precision design the pattern is penciled or chalked onto the sculpture for mosaic placement.

Julie has a beautiful almost painterly fashion with her color placement. This is a mix of realistic and fantasy fish with a peacock spot on its tail.

Julie worked very hard on her sculpture and read about a contest at Delphi Glass in East Lansing, Michigan. She entered her beautiful fish sculpture and won first place for mosaic category in the Art Glass Festival 2014 .

In Julie's words: "Although you were allowed to enter more than one art piece, I entered only my fish.  They wanted a title.  So I named her, Queen Moby.  I worked on and off on her construction for about 2 years with the guidance of Molly Moblo Perusse (mosaic artist extraordinaire) of A Work of Art Studio.

The entries had to be completed toward the end of March.  The festival entries were juried by “3 glass artists with at least 10 years’ experience”.  Your art pieces were then on display, open to the public for the month of April.  I was very lucky to have placed first in the Mosaic category. They have yet to announce the in- store People’s Choice award. Thanks to Molly and the entire art group at A Work of Art Studio."

Upcoming Art Classes at A Work of Art Studio

 Beginning Mosaic Class Thursday, May 8: Learn the basics of mosaic design and direct application on a 12x12 wood board. Bring a basic design idea or drawing. Class starts Thursday, May 8, 6-9pm and continues every Thursday until finished. $75.- All materials included.

 Mixed Media Acrylic Painting Class: Thursday, May 15 + 22: Come and create with the talented artist, Charis Moblo, on an 8"x8" canvas with acrylic paints, papers, paint pens, etc. Thursday, May 15 (and 22nd, if necessary) 6-9pm. $30.- RSVP required by pre-payment.

Kids Art Saturdays-May 24, June 14, July 5, July 26, August 16, September 6: For kids 10 years and up (younger than 10 ok if parent stays to assist).1 -3 pm. Lots of different hands on activities. Six sessions every 3 weeks through September. $15.- per child, materials included. RSVP by pre-payment required (pay at shop, space is limited).

Watercolor/Mixed Media Class- 6-9 pm. Sessions: May 29, June 26, July 24, Aug 19, Sept 18 No experience necessary. Paint a watercolor picture in one 3 hour class. $20.- all materials provided. RSVP required by pre-payment at studio. 

Cement Leaf Class- Tuesday, June 3: Come and make a cement bowl from a rhubarb leaf. Tuesday, June 3, 6-9 pm. $25.- all materials included. Second night to unveil and clean leaves Tuesday, June 10, 6-9 pm.

Soap Making Class- Thursday, June 5: 6-9pm. $35., 

  all materials included. Limited to 6 students, RSVP required by pre-    payment. Learn the basics of lye soap making along with a bit of history of the craft by making about 2 pounds of soap. First week make and pour soap, second visit (to be determined) we will cut, finish and then let it finish curing (final curing about a month). We will use goat's milk or green tea for the base with the lye!

Square Wagon Wheel Rug Class- Tuesday, July 8:  Make a rug by weaving sheets around a square frame (as opposed to a hula hoop-round rug). 3 session class starting Tuesday,July 8, 6-9pm, $35.- Bring 2 full size sheets, color of your choice. RSVP by pre-payment required.

Wire Sculpture Base for Mosaic Class- Thursday, August 14: Learn how to make a basic sculpture wire frame, harden it with plaster gauze and cement, and cover with mosaic tesserae. Class will be extensive, as long as it takes to finish sculptures. Every Thursday night starting August 14, until we are finished. Materials included. Cost: $125.- RSVP required by pre-payment.
